Flat roof insulation
Flat roofs offer a number of advantages over traditional pitched roofs including cost, ease of installation and low maintenance requirements. They also present the opportunity to incorporate facilities such as roof terraces, car parking and increasingly green roofs.
There are essentially two types of flat roof: the cold roof, in which insulation is placed beneath the deck, and the warm roof, where insulation is installed above the structural deck. While traditional cold roofs were once commonplace, many suffered from poor ventilation resulting in condensation build-up. Today, warm roofs are recognised as delivering significantly better performance in every respect.
Warm roofs can be finished in a number of different ways including single ply membranes, mastic asphalt, concrete slab and mechanically fastened systems. In each case, the basic principle is the same, with the mineral wool being laid on top of a vapour control layer or waterproof membrane, and the roof surface applied on top (either directly or in multiple layers, depending on the system used).
As well as delivering excellent thermal performance, the use of mineral wool insulation also results in significant improvements to the acoustic performance of timber or metal decks.
